Curriculum Highlights

The Springboard Curriculum is play-based and integrates therapy and education. Curriculum is organised as a continuum with Level One for complex needs (focusing on communication and cognition, physical development, and personal health education), Level Two for Severe Learning Difficulties (six main subject areas: Communication, Language and Literacy, Cognition, KUW, Personal development, physical development, and creative development), and Level Three for more moderate learning difficulties (eleven subject headings in standalone sessions). The curriculum is delivered across Primary, Secondary, and Post 16 phases and uses a range of access methods (AAC such as PODD, PECs, Makaton; Eye gaze; Intensive Interaction). Multi-sensory teaching, ICT/assistive technology, and a strong emphasis on independence and real-life skills are integral to learning. Assessment and progression are governed by GAS (Goal Attainment Scaling) linked to EHCP outcomes, with progress tracked via I can statements and termly progress reviews.

SEND Provision

All pupils have SEND or a disability and have EHCPs. The school has a multi-disciplinary team including Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, a Music Therapist, and school nurses. On entry, staff conduct a baseline assessment; GAS targets linked to EHCP outcomes; progress is monitored termly and discussed at progress meetings. Pupils are supported through GAS targets linked to EHCP outcomes, with ongoing access to therapy programmes (Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and related services) as required. EHCPs are reviewed annually, and a range of identification methods (including parental and teacher concerns, external agency liaison, health diagnoses, and prior settings) are used to determine support needs.

Admissions Criteria

Waverley School is a maintained day special school for children aged 5-19. The youngest pupils are educated offsite at Waverley@Honilands and Waverley@Bell Lane. Admissions follow the policy published on the school website.
