Curriculum Highlights

In line with the New National Curriculum Statement as a state-funded school we must offer a curriculum which is balanced and broadly based and which: Promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society. Prepares pupils at the school for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. Durants school provides learners with opportunities for enjoyment and achievement through a rich, broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum matched to ages, abilities, interests, aptitudes and special needs. Pupils learn through play, exploration, practical activities and community involvement. Our curriculum Programmes of Study have been developed to support pupils to: Develop communication skills in speech, gesture, sign or symbol so that they can interact with other people, make choices, follow instructions and explanations and access the key concepts needed for learning. At KS3, students will be introduced to some AQA unit awards which accredit steps in learning. This will be extended in KS4 where AQA units comprise a large amount of the curriculum to prepare them for relevant qualifications. The core qualifications for students to achieve at KS4 are Entry Level certificates in English, maths and Science. Some GCSEs may be an option for more academically able students. At KS5, Students will enter the Sixth Form where they will follow a bespoke timetable suited to their needs and interests. We are developing our KS5 offer to include: ELC, Level 1/ 2, GCSE, BTEC and A-Level qualifications.

Admissions Criteria

DFE age range - 11-19 (varies for the Satellite - see below). Durants School provides education for children and young people aged 11-19 who have a diagnosis of autism and an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The satellite is for children and young people who will be able to manage the academic and social demands of being part of a mainstream school. The Local Authority will name a school on a child or young person’s EHCP based on the information from consultations with schools. Some students who have Durants School named on their EHCPs will attend the Durants Satellite at Winchmore School. The satellite also provides Post-16 education from 2021/22 (Year 12...)
