Curriculum Highlights

The Derby Moor Curriculum is ambitious and logically sequenced across KS3-5, with a focus on developing future employability skills. Key Stage 3 consists of five 1-hour lessons per day (Y7–Y9) totaling 25 lessons per week. Languages offered include French, Spanish, Panjabi and Urdu. Drop Down Days cover safety, student well-being, relationships and sex education, use of social media, radicalisation, CSE and health. The Derby Moor Classroom 2.0 provides a consistent approach to delivering the curriculum with high-quality teaching episodes. Schemes of learning incorporate non-negotiables such as employability/skills, resilience, independence, cultural capital, excitement and engagement. Numeracy and literacy skills are coordinated across schemes to help students who are below expected levels catch up. A detailed transition plan supports students moving from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3. There is a broad range of curricular offers at KS4 and KS5 with emphasis on future progression to higher education or employment. The curriculum is designed to promote aspiration and high achievement across subject areas.

SEND Provision

Derby Moor Spencer Academy provides SEND support through high-quality teaching and a personalised, differentiated curriculum. If a student continues to make less than expected progress, the SEND Team will assess whether the student has SEN. The academy uses a four-step process known as the Graduated Approach to ensure barriers to learning are removed and effective provision is put in place. The SEND Team works with Specialist Teaching Assistants and external agencies as needed. Parents are kept informed with termly Data Point progress reports, and there are three annual review/target discussions for parents of students with SEND, including annual reviews for high-need pupils. The school emphasises inclusion, with extra-curricular activities accessible to students with SEND and Thrive, Nurture and Innovation provisions integrated into support for learning. The SENCO is available for contact and appointments via [email protected] or 01332 772706.
