excellence respect generosity service lifelong learning seeking truth

The Catholic Christian community at Cardinal Heenan endeavours to help students to know and build a relationship with Jesus Christ and to live the Catholic faith through prayer, sacraments and service.

Head Teacher's Message

Headteacher Mr D Kelly describes Cardinal Heenan as a well-established, thriving Catholic school with high standards, outstanding students and exceptional staff. The school emphasises a Catholic ethos and the Veritas motto, a love of learning, creativity and hard work, and aims to inspire excellence by encouraging every pupil to be the person God calls them to be, in preparation for this life and the life to come.

Curriculum Highlights

Broad range of subjects taught in Key Stage 3 before selecting Key Stage 4 options. Teaching emphasises knowledge with teachers designing lessons to help students access a wide ‘foundational knowledge’ across subjects. Religious Education accounts for 10% of teaching time in Years 7–8. Year 9 core curriculum includes English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Spanish and a choice of two options. Years 10 and 11 include a core set of subjects with a range of further option subjects; two‑week work experience for Year 10; Lourdes pilgrimage and various university/business trips as enrichment. Extracurricular activities and enrichment opportunities complement timetabled lessons. Study Skills programme and metacognitive reflection to support how students learn and progress. Subject specialists and curriculum leaders ensure coherence and fidelity to each subject.
