Hayfield is a Rights Respecting School (UNICEF RRSA). The school describes its rights-respecting approach, including references to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and related rights and responsibilities for pupils.

Head Teacher's Message

Head Teacher Mr L. Comber emphasises Hayfield as a local authority specialist school for pupils with social communication needs/autism (including some mainstream pupils) and often with additional needs. He notes long-standing National Autistic Society accreditation and Ofsted Good rating with Outstanding Practice in Early Years, and states that EHCPs are needed to access places. The message underlines structure, routine, a blend of specialist approaches to support sensory and emotional needs, and a warm, inclusive ethos.

Curriculum Highlights

Three curriculum pathways: Pre-formal Curriculum (Early Years), Semi-Formal Curriculum (Lower School), Formal Curriculum (Upper School) Curriculum emphasizes visual learning with graphic symbols and pictures (labels). Use of PECS and MAKATON; TEACCH approach where needed. All pupils have an Education Health Care Plan and learning is delivered through 1:1 or small group sessions.

Breakfast Club available from 7:45am with a £4 charge and an additional option at 8:15am with a £2 charge. After School Club runs from 3:30pm to 5:45pm with an £8.50 charge.

SEND Provision

All pupils at Hayfield have an Education Health Care Plan; the school provides learning for a wide range of abilities and needs with 1:1 or small group sessions as part of its approach to teaching and learning.
