Cockburn Reach Academy is a forty-place special school for pupils aged five to eleven (Year 1 to Year 6). Pupils are dual registered with their referring school and all have SEND needs, with the primary SEND being Social, Emotional and Mental Health. The aim is to re-engage pupils with education and prevent suspension or permanent exclusion from mainstream primary school. Pupils attend Reach Monday–Thursday; on Fridays they attend their mainstream school with Reach staff. The integration process into the mainstream usually takes three weeks; for some pupils a specialist setting may be more appropriate and the referring school will apply for an Educational, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), a process that can take up to twenty weeks. Once a final EHCP is in place, Reach supports the pupil with their transition into the named school. On average the pupil attends Cockburn Reach Academy for one to two terms. The Reach ethos includes Include, Develop individually and work together, Respect each other and recognise individual differences, Show equality and diversity to all, Build and maintain friendships, Engage with an enriched curriculum, Enjoy education, Have a healthy and happy mindset, learn core skills, and Learn to succeed. Equality: Reach is committed to eliminating unlawful discrimination and promoting equality of opportunity, tackling prejudice and promoting understanding of people with disabilities, different races, beliefs/religions, sexual orientation, age or gender; policies include Cockburn Equality and Diversity.
