Faith Enrichment Equality Learning for Life Oracy

The school has a strong Christian/Catholic ethos permeating school life. Although it is a Catholic school, it welcomes applications from those of other faiths or no faith and aims to provide a community characterized by joy and purposeful learning. The school is a Partnership School of the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust with a Catholic character that guides its aims and activities.

Headteacher Mr P Naughton welcomes visitors and describes St Joseph’s as a long-standing, safe, happy Catholic primary school in Blaydon, part of the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust. The message notes a strong Catholic ethos, high standards, and a commitment to extra-curricular activities and a supportive home–school partnership; it also invites visits to experience the school.

Curriculum Highlights

RE is at the centre of the curriculum, with the aim of enabling pupils to grow spiritually, morally and socially. Five curriculum drivers: Faith, Enrichment, Equality, Learning for Life, Oracy. Reading is a key element; Read Write Inc phonics scheme is used in Key Stage 1. Curriculum is broad and balanced, incorporating National Curriculum requirements and experiences to meet pupils' needs. Curriculum emphasizes using the local environment to support learning and aims to develop resilient, independent, reflective learners. Subject overviews are provided for Art, Computing, Early Years, English, French, Geography, History, Science, Maths, Music, PE, PSHE, RE, Reading.

Wraparound Care

Breakfast Club: Yes After-School Care: Yes

Breakfast Club runs Monday–Friday (term time) 7:30am–8:40am; cost £3.00 per session; breakfast not provided on site (parents must supply breakfast apart from fruit and refreshments); registration required; children escorted to the yard at the start of the school day. Kidz Zone wraparound care runs 3:15pm–6:00pm, Monday–Friday; first hour (3:15–4:15pm) £5.00 per child, full night £8.00 per child; 24 hours notice requested for attendance; bookings via Arbor (Parent Portal or App).

Admissions Criteria

PAN (Published Admission Number) set at 30 pupils to be admitted to reception; admissions policy formally adopted by the governing body as the Admissions Authority; applications must be on Gateshead Council’s common application form (CAF); visits to the school are welcome; in-year transfers are possible via a School Transfer Application Form.

Financial Information

School meals cost £3.00 per meal (£15.00 per week), payable on Mondays by cash or cheques to BWCET, or online via Arbor. Breakfast Club is £3.00 per session. Kidz Zone wraparound care is £5.00 for the first hour (3:15–4:15pm) and £8.00 for the full night (3:15–6:00pm). All sessions must be pre-booked via Arbor (Parent Portal or App).
