St Mary’s is a Catholic Primary School with Jesus at the heart of all we do, co-located with the parish church, and maintains strong links with the parish community and catechists; the school emphasises Catholic life, values, and religious education as central to its ethos under the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.

Headteacher Mrs C Bland presents St Mary’s as a welcoming, Christ-centred Catholic community with high expectations, strong pastoral support, and a clear Catholic ethos; the school has a good Ofsted status as of March 2025.

Curriculum Highlights

Knowledge-rich, enquiry-based curriculum across subjects. Mathematics taught with a concrete/pictorial/abstract progression, daily fluency, and targeted interventions; use of Times Tables Rockstars and Sumdog. Phonics taught with Monster Phonics; Year 1 Phonics Screening Check; interventions in Years 2 and 3. Use of Kapow Primary for Design & Technology and Kapow Music for Music; learning content guided by the National Curriculum with cross-curricular links. Art and Design emphasises observational drawing, sketchbooks, and Big Art Week; use of Art vocabulary and artists; assessment via sketchbooks and unit outcomes. Geography and History are taught with enquiry-based progression and fieldwork, including coastal/location knowledge due to the north-east coastal location. English curriculum emphasizes reading for pleasure, writing across forms, and assessments including cold/hot writes and SATs where appropriate. Physical Education includes 2 hours of PE per week, KS2 swimming 25 metres, and a broad festival and club program.
