Head Teacher's Message

Welcome to The Chalfonts, an Independent Grammar School situated by the Rye Park in High Wycombe. Our aim is simple – we want to equip our students with the right skills to thrive amidst the challenges and changes they will face in their futures. We think the best way to achieve this is through the IB curriculum delivered in small, supportive, co-educational classes using a combination of a Harkness methodology and by promoting good habits and a genuine work ethic in the students.

Curriculum Highlights

The Chalfonts Independent Grammar School uses the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme, including the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP). Small class sizes with a maximum of 14 students per class around Harkness tables. The Harkness Method – student-led discussion at boardroom-style tables to develop confidence in communication and collaboration. ATLs (Thinking, Communication, Research, Self-management, Social skills) and the Five Surfaces framework to support learning. DP components include Groups 1–6 (Studies in Language and Literature; Language Acquisition; Individuals and Societies; Sciences; Mathematics; The Arts), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay (EE). MYP subject groups include Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Science, Arts (Music, Visual Arts and Drama), Physical and Health Education, and Design.

Admissions Criteria

Admits students across the ability range and provides advice and guidance on subject choices to tailor the Diploma Programme to each student. Year group admissions are possible at any time if there is space, with a maximum class size of 14 students.
