Curriculum Highlights

The school follows the National Curriculum, with core subjects English, Mathematics, Science and Computing, plus foundation subjects such as Art, Design Technology, Geography, History, Music, and Physical Education. Curriculum is topic-based with real-world contexts and emphasis on reading, writing, numeracy and personal development. A daily systematic phonics program is taught in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 using Essential Letters and Sounds; Accelerated Reader is used in Key Stage 2 for home reading with online quizzes and tracking. Foundation Stage learning is organized around seven areas (three prime and four specific) within the EYFS framework, emphasizing play, relationships, and enabling environments. Assessment for learning is central, with staff using year-group expectations, internal tracking, and termly progress reviews; there is a focus on targeted interventions when needed. Subjects such as Geography, History, Science, Computing, Music, and Physical Education are described with aims to develop enquiry, skills, and wider global citizenship.

SEND Provision

SEND provision is coordinated by the SENCo with targeted support via Quality First Teaching, small-group interventions, and specialist external services (Speech and Language Therapy, Educational Psychology, ASD Outreach, Sensory Service). Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and termly reviews may be used, with involvement of parents.

Admissions Criteria

Admissions follow Sunderland Local Authority policies. Nursery admissions are dealt with in school; Reception admissions are handled by the City of Sunderland’s Admissions Team. Places are allocated according to the academy's Admissions Policy and oversubscription criteria. Applications can be made outside the admission round and waiting lists may be used.
