Dorchester Primary School operates a Local Authority Designated SEND Unit for up to 30 pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans, with Communication and Interaction as the primary need. The unit was formalised in September 2023 and expanded to 30 places in January 2026. Children in the SEND Unit have access to a bespoke, purposeful curriculum focused on meeting their individual needs. Each classroom is staffed by a qualified, experienced teacher, supported by at least two Achievement Support Assistants (ASAs). The spaces provide a safe, secure environment, and staff undertake regular training to keep knowledge up to date. The curriculum is designed around meeting targets taken from EHCPs and other relevant documents, with a focus on developing independence and life-skills. The SEND Unit has access to a sensory room in all classrooms to support learning. Fundamentals of Learning assessment (from the SCERTS model) is used, alongside EHCP targets, to assess development and guide learning.
Admissions are coordinated through Hull City Council. For EHCP pupils, admissions follow the Code of Practice on Special Educational Needs; if a school is named in a child’s EHCP, the school is required to admit the pupil. If there are fewer applications than places, all applicants will be offered a place. Deferral requests will be assessed case by case. If applications exceed places, criteria will be applied as set out in the policy (see page 2). Appeals are handled with an appeals form/guidance and heard within 40 academy days for normal rounds (30 days for in-year admissions) by an independent appeal panel. An Equality Impact Assessment states there are no identified differential impacts. Further information is available via the School Catchment Map and Hull City Council Primary Admissions.
