Head Teacher's Message

Head Teacher Deborah Shepherd welcomes visitors to The Courtyard and describes it as a specialist ASC provision for students aged 13-19, described as an oasis of calm, with a personalised ambitious curriculum for up to 72 students, and interventions supported by CAMHS, Educational Psychology and Speech and Language teams, plus onsite Art Therapist.

Curriculum Highlights

Curriculum designed around four pathways: Formal Pathway; Independence; Sports and PSD; Nurture. Stage Not Age: classes taught in vertical year groups rather than by age. Subject Areas: STEAM (Science, ICT, Maths, Art and PE); LCC (Language Culture and Communication) presented through English language and literature; Humanities and Performing Arts; PD (Personal Development) presented through Home Cooking/Hospitality, French, Personal and Social Development and Relationships and Sex Education. Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Independence skills developed during daily keyworker sessions. Votes for Schools used to provoke discussion about equality, inclusion, bullying, discrimination and safeguarding, promoting British Values linked to welfare, preventing radicalisation and extremism. Work Experience: Careers programme includes a minimum of 80 hours of work experience; aligns with CDI Career Development Framework and Gatsby Benchmarks. Enriching Educational Visits; Outreach Programme with Neurodiversity training for employers.

SEND Provision

In the 2024-25 financial year, the school will receive Pupil Premium funding for each child registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years: £1,345 for students in reception year to year 6; £985 for students in year 7 to year 11. Funding received will be allocated to the following areas: Support of behaviour, emotional and mental health issues; Social communication skills improvement; Improved speech, language and communication skills; Improved literacy and numeracy skills; School-Led Tutoring.
