Christine Smiles, Head Teacher, describes Talbot House as a place where the aim is to inspire children to become resilient, motivated, and successful adults in a positive, supportive environment; all pupils have an EHCP and the school is a non-maintained special school and charity for children with complex needs (SEMH/ASD); maximum roll is 70 and the school is divided into four Zones; pupils work towards qualifications including GCSEs and other awards; OFSTED rated the school Good in July 2023.
All pupils have an EHC Plan; on enrolment, we gather as much information about the child and alongside information from their EHCP we formulate support plans for each pupil. This is completed within two weeks. The class teacher or House Group lead, along with staff working in the team, continue to update the support plan throughout the year as and when appropriate. The support plans are a working document that are kept up to date and shared with staff if changes are made. We identify any support intervention, this could be: one to one Thrive, Rebound Therapy, communication cards, now and next boards, Attention Autism sessions, sensory time, occupational therapy, or speech and language. We have many other therapeutic offers (see our therapeutic offer page). Our aim is to create personalised learning opportunities for each pupil based on their needs and their EHCP outcomes to successfully prepare for life after school and beyond. Preparation for adulthood is woven throughout our offer at Talbot House, for all our pupils.
Age range 4-16; we can have children on roll from up to 6 local authorities around the Northeast; referrals can come from several places, directly from local authorities, from parents and from previous schools, and can be received for all ages of children. We take referrals all year round, not just for September.
