Curriculum Highlights

Springboard Curriculum (play-based early years curriculum) Branching Out Curriculum (pre-formal, semi-formal, formal levels) with a continuum of skills and differentiated learning PHONICS & READING: Twinkl Phonics program (Systematic Synthetic Phonics) based on Letters & Sounds Assessment and progress tracking using Earwig, Branch Maps, and EHCP targets; progress reviewed in pupil progress meetings and annual EHCP reviews; curriculum is delivered with differentiation and small class sizes (up to 8 pupils per class with a teacher and at least 3 Teaching Assistants). Curriculum covers ten subject areas at the formal level ( Literacy, Maths, Science, DT, Art, Music, Humanities, P.E., Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Computing ) with ongoing cross-curricular teaching to generalise skills.

SEND Provision

All pupils have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP); provision includes Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and school nurses; specialist input from the Sensory Support Service (QTVI and QToD) with MDT collaboration; all pupils have IEPs linked to EHCP outcomes; progress tracked via Branch Maps and Earwig; EHCPs reviewed annually; families are involved in transitions and training.

Admissions Criteria

Tower Hamlets Local Authority (LA) sets formal admission criteria for Stephen Hawking School. Pupils will have a combination of profound and multiple learning, health and care needs; require sophisticated specialist support in terms of resources and staff; have multi-professional assessments which specify the profound and complex nature of the difficulties. Admission follows the 1996 Education Act and the Special Education Code of Practice, through a full multi-professional assessment coordinated by the Local Authority's Special Needs Section. LA SEN contact: The SEN Section, The Town Hall, 160 Whitechapel Road, London E1 1BJ, Tel: 020 7364 5000. If admission is pursued after a visit, Tower Hamlets SEN will process the papers and send them to the school, which will then contact the family to arrange a start date.
