Welcome to Haughton School. At Haughton School we genuinely believe that all children can experience success. We are committed to work in partnership with children, parents/carers and governors to build and maintain positive relationships and work together to provide opportunities that support and enable pupils to achieve and progress to their full potential.
Admission criteria: Haughton is a maintained day special school for children aged rising 5-11 years. The Local Authority (LA) is the admissions authority and the school currently has places for 134 children. Classes are typically up to 15 pupils with a teacher and at least one Teaching Assistant, with additional support as needed. The school receives advice from health professionals to meet pupils’ needs. Funding is place-led by the LA. Placement criteria require pupils to be under assessment or have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) with complex needs in at least two areas described in the SEND Code of Practice (typically cognition and learning with moderate learning difficulties; may include communication and interaction such as autism and/or speech and language difficulties; and may include emotional, social and mental wellbeing difficulties; may also include sensory or physical difficulties). Pupils may be considered following statutory assessment or EHCP, annual reviews, transfer from another specialist provision, parental requests, or other exceptional circumstances. Prioritisation among applicants is given to those without a current school place, Children in Care (CIC) when appropriate, and when the current placement no longer meets the child’s needs. Admission procedures involve the LA deciding referrals, with the headteacher consulted; there is a 15 working day window for consideration, after which the LA notifies parents and the child’s current school. Transport is provided for those living 3+ miles away, and can be provided for nearer pupils with specific transport needs. Change of placement requires LA consultation. Inclusion opportunities may include inclusion in other settings. Monitoring and review occur at least termly with Annual Reviews.
