Head Teacher's Message

Dave Hewitt welcomes visitors and describes The Joseph Rowntree School as an 11-18 comprehensive with over 1,300 students, including over 200 in the sixth form. He highlights modern buildings and state-of-the-art facilities, a broad curriculum, extensive extra-curricular activities, strong pastoral care, and a commitment to safeguarding; Ofsted judged the school 'Good' in October 2022. He emphasizes a welcoming, high-quality learning environment and ambition for the future.

Curriculum Highlights

Broad and balanced curriculum delivered in an engaging manner. KS3, KS4 and KS5 subjects offered. Wide range of A Level and vocational courses in the Sixth Form. Strong Sixth Form results with around 75% of Year 13 students leaving for university and around 40-50% of these students attending Russell Group universities.

Admissions Criteria

Our admissions procedures are in line with the City of York Council policies. Starting Year 7 in September 2027, applications can be made from 12 September 2026 up to 31 October 2026. If you apply online, your application result will be available online on National Offer Day, Monday 1 March 2027, via the Parent Portal; if you did not apply online, you will receive a letter confirming your result a few days later.
