Facilities

Speech and Language DSP unit (max 15 pupils, Years 1–6) Outdoor classroom Ground floor wheelchair accessibility NHS Speech and Language Therapists based in school weekly (via DSP)

Curriculum Highlights

DSP supports intensive speech and language intervention with NHS therapists (2 sessions per week of ELKLAN-supported input); DSP staff work with parents and professionals for integrated outcomes. Maths uses Power Maths differentiated for needs; literacy uses National Curriculum 2014 steps; other subjects are taught via the REAL project approach within the DSP and mainstream settings. DSP unit follows its own curriculum for the first half-term (social development and friendship targets) before integrating into mainstream classes with support; pupils join year-group activities and trips as appropriate. Children in the DSP have weekly life skills lessons (cooking, social skills, community involvement) and access to the outdoor classroom.

SEND Provision

The school hosts a Designated Specialist Provision (DSP) with a Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) focus, capacity up to 15 pupils from Year 1 to Year 6. The DSP provides intensive speech and language intervention, works with parents and professionals, and NHS Speech and Language Therapists are based in school weekly. DSP pupils follow the mainstream curriculum with differentiation; literacy uses National Curriculum 2014 steps; maths uses Power Maths; the DSP includes life skills lessons and access to the school’s outdoor classroom. Transition and EHCP-based target setting are part of DSP practice, with some pupils moving to mainstream classes as appropriate. Admission to the DSP is handled through the Special Education Service (SES).

Admissions Criteria

All admissions to the DSP unit are handled through the Special Education Service (SES). Places within the unit are allocated through a panel meeting following the implementation or review of a child’s EHCP where the primary need is speech, language and communication needs which cannot be met effectively within a mainstream classroom.
