Mr Culley, Acting Headteacher, welcomes visitors and explains The Mark Way School is for young people aged 11-16 with moderate learning difficulties. The school emphasises aspirational outcomes, a strong sense of community, highly trained staff, and that all students have an Education and Healthcare Plan (EHCP) for placement. The school invites visits and offers paper copies of documents via the Admin Office.
Main criterion for admission is that students have learning difficulties in the moderate or, in some cases, severe range. In addition, students may have other needs including motor impairments (gross/fine), hearing impairment, visual impairment, perceptual problems and spatial awareness difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders, medical conditions requiring specific support, emotional/behavioural and social difficulties, and high dependencies upon adult support due to complex multiple disabilities or other conditions. Special criteria for admission may include profound sensory impairment, life-threatening conditions requiring constant monitoring, high-risk conditions requiring constant supervision (e.g., severe epilepsy), severe and challenging behaviour, severe and complex multiple disability or disorder, or learning difficulties outside the moderate range. Requests for admission under these special criteria may be considered by the Governing Body if the school is not felt to be the best placement; considerations include resource implications, health and safety, availability of an appropriate peer group, and findings from assessment during trial integration. Admission/assessment procedures involve a referral, school visits led by the Headteacher or representative, and the possibility of finite-period assessment or ongoing assessment, with potential alternative placement discussed with parents/guardians and the Local Education Authority.
