Head Teacher's Message

Zoë Baines, Headteacher, welcomes visitors and describes Slated Row as a two-site, state-funded special school in Milton Keynes within The Aspire Federation. She notes awards including the 2025 MK Education Award for Headteacher of the Year and the 2024 SEND School of the Year, and invites contact for more information.

Curriculum Highlights

Personalised curriculum adapted from the National Curriculum; Progression Learning Plans (PLP) feeding into Medium Term Plans (MLP); teachers create short-term plans from these documents. All students have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Curriculum is delivered through learning pathways: Key Route, Accelerated Route, with EYFS incorporated via Stepping Stones. Pathways include Structured, Sensory and Scaffold with defined classroom environments, staff ratios, and focus on engagement and social-emotional development. Curriculum Interventions include 1:1 or small group work in Phonics, Reading, Mathematics, Wellbeing, and PE. SALT and Educational Psychology involvement; use of AAC systems where appropriate; collaboration with OT and Art/Movement therapies. Arts: Music and Art Progressive Learning Plans; English/RE/Geography/History/Maths/PE/PSHE/Science/Technologies Progressive Learning Plans. Careers education integrated across PSHE with Skills Builder, workplace experiences, and Post-16 pathways; enterprise and work experience opportunities.

Admissions Criteria

Entry Criteria: Slated Row requires an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) for all students and serves children with complex learning needs. The school states that its entry criteria are designed to ensure that all students possess an EHCP, and notes that students do not present with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs as their primary focus. It offers three distinct pathways of provision—Structured, Sensory and Scaffold—with a sensory environment to support learning. The school does not offer GCSEs and does not accommodate children with extremely physically challenging behaviours. The local authority is the admissions officer for Slated Row School, so referrals and appeals are managed by Milton Keynes/SEN services. Slated Row operates on two sites: Primary & KS3 at Old Wolverton Campus and KS4 & Post 16 at Kents Hill Campus; informal visits are welcomed after school hours but do not guarantee a place. Informal visits and the admission process are described as separate from an immediate offer of a place.
