Religious Education at Shiney Row Primary School is based on the Sunderland Agreed Syllabus and focuses on knowledge and understanding of religion, critical thinking and personal reflection. Pupils study Christianity and other principal religions and worldviews represented locally and nationally, developing empathy, tolerance and respect, and understanding how beliefs influence individuals and communities. The aims are to enable pupils to make sense of religious and non-religious beliefs, evaluate perspectives, and relate beliefs to their own lives.

Headteacher Mr N. Houghton expresses pride in pupils, high expectations, and a commitment to an inclusive education that meets diverse needs. He describes Shiney Row’s mission to provide education for all, nurture high aspirations, and empower every child to succeed, with a goal to inspire lifelong learning and to help each child become their best. He highlights core values of respect, responsibility, collaboration, perseverance and success as the foundations of the school culture.

The curriculum includes knowledge and understanding of the world and events that have shaped it, with clear links to locality, region, national and global contexts. There is a clear emphasis on securing strong literacy and numeracy outcomes, prioritising fluent reading and comprehension.
