Curriculum Highlights

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards for learning, development, and care for children from birth to age 5 in England. The curriculum is divided into seven areas, with a strong focus on the three prime areas for younger children: Prime Areas (Communication and Language; Physical Development; Personal, Social and Emotional Development) and Specific Areas (Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; Expressive Arts and Design). The Characteristics of Effective Learning guide how children explore, discover, and grow as learners: Play and explore; Actively learn; Create and think critically. Daycare and Reception curricula emphasise prime areas and provide structured teaching in phonics, writing, and mathematics, with stories, first-hand experiences, and purposeful enhancements.

SEND Provision

At Low Road and Windmill Primary Schools, we are committed to ensuring that every child—regardless of need—has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We believe in nurturing the whole child. Happy, confident, and emotionally secure children are better equipped to engage with learning and reach their full potential. We have high expectations for all learners and recognise that some children may require additional support or tailored provision to help them succeed. Our inclusive approach ensures that every child is valued, supported, and challenged appropriately. Working in close partnership with parents, carers, and a range of external professionals, we aim for all pupils to make strong progress from their individual starting points. We regularly review and adapt our provision to meet evolving needs and celebrate every step forward. We are proud to collaborate with the JESS Cluster Team, based at our Windmill site. JESS provides a wide range of family support and therapeutic services across Beeston, Belle Isle, Holbeck, and Hunslet—supporting 12 primary schools, 2 high schools, and 5 children’s centres. Their work with voluntary, community, and faith sector organisations helps ensure joined-up support for families and reduces the need for statutory interventions. While Windmill is not a designated resourced provision, we are deeply committed to creating bespoke opportunities for our SEND pupils across all age phases. We offer a variety of tailored spaces and interventions designed to meet individual needs, promote independence, and support emotional regulation. Nurture; Stepping Stones; Doves; Rainbow
