Head Teacher's Message

Head of School Anita Bancerz welcomes families and describes OKQA as an autism-focused, child- and family-centered academy with purpose-built facilities, a low-arousal environment, autism-specific resources, and evidence-based practices (TEACCH, SCERTS, Total Communication). She highlights collaboration with Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and social workers, safeguarding as a priority, and opportunities for parent training and involvement.

Facilities

Purpose-built, state-of-the-art building for children and young people (CYP) with autism and significant learning difficulties (SLD) Spacious, low-arousal learning environment Autism-specific resources OKQA Satellite Provision at Avondale Park Primary School (OKQ Satellite Provision)

Curriculum Highlights

Well-sequenced, broad and balanced curriculum Personalised learning tailored to each pupil’s needs, strengths and interests Focus on academic, communication, social, regulation and life skills Total Communication Approach SCERTS framework to develop social communication and emotional regulation Sensory integration approaches Extensive staff training and professional development Satellite Provision as part of curriculum delivery

SEND Provision

The academy uses a Total Communication Approach to support communication, with a SCERTS framework and sensory integration approaches. It emphasises autism-specific strategies (TEACCH) and works with a network of professionals including Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists. The school provides extensive training for staff and offers training for parents to support understanding of autism and effective methods of support.

Admissions Criteria

Admissions are handled in partnership with the Bi-Borough SEN department. The Head of School decides if the school can meet a child’s needs from papers alone; if possible, this is reported to the Local Authority SEN Panel, which may request visits/observations to verify suitability. If the school is full, it cannot offer a place. Transition plans and visits (including social stories/photos) are arranged to support moves from current settings.
