Ethos & Values

"The Future We Create Every Day"

Love Hope Wisdom Community

St Michael’s is a Church of England Academy and a church school. Our Christian ethos is guided by our Christian vision, with our Christian values underpinning the vision and giving pupils confidence to listen, question, explore and challenge themselves in pursuit of learning.

Curriculum Highlights

Curriculum is knowledge-rich and aims to build foundational knowledge and core skills across subjects, with retrieval practice and progression documents to outline key content and vocabulary. Assessment is continuous through observations, marking, feedback and self-assessment; teachers build on prior learning and use various tools to identify additional support needs. Medium-term plans provide a coherent sequence of lessons, with a focus on revisiting core content and forging connections across subjects. English: Read Write Inc phonics approach, discrete daily phonics, decodable reading, and a reading for pleasure approach with a book-rich environment. Whole Class Reading using the DERIC framework (Decode, Explain, Retrieve, Infer, Choice). Writing follows a sequence based on Rosenshine-influenced structure and Jane Considine’s Write Stuff approach. Maths: Uses the National Curriculum 2014 Programme of Study and materials like DfE NSG RTP and White Rose to structure sequences, emphasising problem-solving, reasoning, and collaborative discussion. Emphasis on a reasoning culture and flexible approaches to solving problems.
