Curriculum Highlights

Curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum, with breadth and depth across subjects and a focus on developing key skills. KS4 offers a mix of vocational (BTEC/Cambridge Nationals) and GCSE qualifications with a dedicated Options process and booklet. Reading, Writing & Communication (RWC) is a central focus with collaboration with external literacy programmes and diagnostic tools. PHSE and Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) are embedded in form time across key stages 3 and 4, with a careers dimension woven throughout the curriculum. The Hazel Wood Curriculum is underpinned by Oak Learning Partnership principles (inclusion, collaboration, and values-driven learning).

SEND Provision

Hazel Wood High School follows a child-centred, inclusive approach with a three-tier inclusion model. Pupils with SEND are educated in the classroom alongside peers with high-quality teaching, with some pupils withdrawn from selected lessons for specialist teaching/intervention. Pupils with an EHCP receive the necessary support as set out in their EHC Plan and have a personalised support programme focused on their specific needs and outcomes. Booster interventions (such as Read, Write, Inc and peer reading) are provided for pupils not on the SEND register. The SENCO is Mrs. R Davison. The school references the Bury Local Offer and Thrive resources as part of its inclusion and safeguarding ecosystem.
