Head Teacher's Message

James Doherty is the Principal of UTC Portsmouth; he has over 10 years’ experience coordinating and delivering physics, chemistry and biology courses, with a background in chemistry, biochemistry and genetics; he emphasises educational innovation and the importance of STEM education.

Curriculum Highlights

STEM-focused curriculum with emphasis on engineering, science and maths Strong emphasis on real-world, employer-informed learning with projects and enrichment Longer college day with independent study time and Chromebooks in a fully cloud-based environment Year 10 GCSE offer with maths, triple science, English (language and literature) and two GCSE equivalents in engineering (Design and Manufacture) Non-examined elements include Training, Enrichment, PSHE and PE; students are assessed against six STEM habits (resilience, creative problem solving, teamwork, responsibility, communication and curiosity) Sixth Form options include A levels, a Combined route with an Engineering certificate, and T levels; strong progression into STEM degrees and apprenticeships

Admissions Criteria

Year 10 admissions: Applications typically open October–November; places are allocated in line with the Admissions Policy and appeals can be made by 30 March 2026. Year 12 (Sixth Form) admissions: Applications to join Year 12 should be made directly to the college; applications close on 12 January 2026; after a short meeting a conditional offer is issued; all appeals should be addressed to the Principal by 30 March 2026.
