Curriculum Highlights

Four golden threads run through our curriculum: Inclusion, outdoor learning, global citizenship and philosophy for children. The learning is underpinned by the fundamental knowledge and skills of reading, writing and maths.

SEND Provision

The Rainbow Room is Mayplace’s Resource Provision for pupils with autism. It currently has 18 children on roll from Reception to Year 6. The provision consists of two classrooms, a sensory room and an outdoor area staffed by Miss Wells, our Provision Lead Teacher. All of our children who are part of the provision also have a place within a mainstream class and are actively included in the life of the school. There is a great focus on language and communication, all children have a speech and language plan and we have an autism specialist speech and language therapist who works in school every Wednesday. Where needed, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), aided language boards and visual symbols to accompany written language is used to support language development. Further activities will be planned as needed to develop children’s independence, social and communication skills, personal safety and emotional regulation. Activities are often shared with parents so that we can work together to support the pupils to develop. Great emphasis is placed on communication, social skills and attention skills. All activities are designed to help children to reduce anxiety, to understand the environment and to develop and extend communication, interpersonal and social skills. We understand that many children face difficulties in coping with change. For this reason, we run a structured visually supported day to help support transitions and reduce anxiety.

Admissions Criteria

Admission criteria for the Rainbow One and Rainbow Two provision include: Age range Reception through to the end of Year 6; All pupils will have a Statement of Educational Needs or EHC Plan; clear medical diagnosis of Autism; primary need must clearly be Autism; English performance indicating potential to achieve within KS1 P7-Band 1 and KS2 P8–Band 3; assessment indicating pre-school age learners are broadly average (e.g., recognisable vocalisations and engagement) and capable of verbal communication without the need for communication aids (though supports may be needed, e.g., SALT); pupils whose autism is a significant barrier and whose learning difficulties cannot be met in a mainstream setting; admission may be refused if funding places are fully subscribed or there is insufficient evidence of autism or presence of additional difficulties; siblings are not automatically admitted.
