Ethos & Values

"Aspire, Achieve, Enjoy"

Value every member of our school community. We are proud to be inclusive. All policies and procedures provide clarity of purpose and are consistently applied. Learning within and beyond the classroom is of high quality. We develop knowledge, skills and understanding, broaden horizons and inspire. We empower staff and students to demonstrate their own creativity, flare and passion for learning. Continual improvement is a moral imperative. Understand that positive relationships are central to our success as a learning organisation. Our young people know that we work tirelessly in their best interests. Expectations are high for all. Staff and students aspire to be the best they can now and in the future. Success or failure for one represents success or failure for all.

The Gateway The Pathway

Curriculum Highlights

Our aim at the academy is to ensure all pupils embed and retain key knowledge needed for each subject at every key stage. The curriculum is broad, deep and knowledge rich. Key Stage 3 curriculum is designed around Big Ideas / Key Concepts with learning journeys. In Year 9 at KS4, pupils choose 4 subjects to study (in addition to core). The Sixth Form study programmes aim to provide breadth and depth, with work experience and a minimum of three Level 3 courses; English and maths may be studied where GCSE grade 4 has not been achieved; most study programmes consist of 11 hours per fortnight.

SEND Provision

The SEN Co-ordinator for Southmoor Academy is Mrs O. Thompson. The Gateway is a facility for pupils to access where they need additional academic and emotional support – pupils will be referred via our Pastoral Team. The Pathway is a tier 3 facility to support pupils who find mainstream school more challenging. The SEN Team includes: Mrs O. Thompson; Miss S. Moody; Ms V. Kapeni, Miss M Ward, Mrs M Jackson, Dr J Reid, Mr C Waters.

Admissions Criteria

Applications for a place should be made through Sunderland City Council using online or paper application processes. Our PAN for Year 7 is 240. Open Evenings are held. The Admissions Process page includes an Admissions Timeline for 2026. Admissions policies 2025-2027 are available.
