Ethos & Values

"GROWING IN GOD’S FAMILY"

To be a safe, happy, caring community of learners. To help all individuals regardless of their race, gender or disability to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to achieve their full potential in a rapidly changing world. To develop understanding of and respect for a wide range of religious values, languages and cultural traditions and different ways of life. To encourage an enjoyment of lifelong learning. To encourage positive parental and community involvement. To promote healthy lifestyles. To provide a curriculum that is stimulating, broad, balanced, innovative and creative. To celebrate achievement.

Our Catholic ethos is central to our life at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The school emphasises regular prayer, liturgies and Religious Education lessons, with a chapel described as a central, sacred space for reflection and worship. Religious symbols such as crucifixes, icons and statues are visible throughout the school, and classrooms feature dedicated prayer focus areas. Catholic and British values are integrated in daily life, with strong partnerships between school, home and parish and ongoing staff development in Religious Education.

Head Teacher's Message

Headteacher Helen Hayes warmly welcomes families to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, emphasising a partnership between home, school and parish, high standards, and a proud Catholic ethos. The message highlights the aim for each child to progress academically, socially and personally in a happy and successful school environment, with staff commitment to celebrate each pupil’s achievements.

Curriculum Highlights

10% of curriculum time is dedicated to Religious Education across all key stages, including the Foundation Stage. From September 2025, a new Religious Education curriculum will be introduced following the revised Religious Education Directory, To Know You More Clearly, with a four-part pattern: hear, believe, celebrate and live the Gospel. Partial implementation in Sept 2025 for EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 with the Lighting the Path scheme; Year 3–6 to trial the Diocesan Pilot Scheme; Full implementation anticipated by Sept 2026 with Lighting the Path across all year groups.

SEND Provision

The school recognises four broad SEND areas: Communication and Interaction; Cognition and Learning; Social, Emotional and Mental Health; and Sensory and/or Physical Difficulties. The SENDCo is Miss Bostock, supported by the inclusion team and learning support assistants who run small-group interventions. The school works with external agencies (SALT, CLASS, BLIS, SpLDATS, EMAT, CAMHS, Early Help, Hearing Impaired Team, Visually Impaired Team, Educational Psychologist, School Nurse) and provides information via the Local Offer. Parents can contact the school office to discuss SEND needs and policy.

Admissions Criteria

The school is a voluntary aided Primary and Nursery admitting children aged three to eleven. Admissions follow the council policy, with visits by appointment available to prospective parents. Applications for admission are handled through the Local Education Authority (Tameside). Nursery places are offered from age 3 (part-time), with reception places following after age 5. The school can provide a ‘Starting out’ booklet for new starters. Visit/tour arrangements and admissions contacts are handled through the school office.
