Headteacher Mrs Janine Storer leads John Shelton since January 2022. She emphasises high expectations, the school values of Respect, Resilience and Responsibility, and the aim to foster a lifelong love of learning with a dream-big motto: DREAM IT BELIEVE IT ACHIEVE IT.

Mulberry Bush Emotional and Social Curriculum is delivered in school four times a week to small groups by the Learning Mentor. Drawing and Talking is delivered by a Specialist SEN Teaching Assistant to small groups on a one-to-one basis.
John Shelton serves children between the ages of 4 and 11. The school also has a Nursery admitting children in the year before they start school (2-3 year olds; 15 hours afternoon sessions) and 3-4 year olds (15 or 30-hour places). Coventry children may be admitted to primary schools at the start of the school year after their fourth birthday if they have reached age four by 31 August. Coventry operates a coordinated admissions scheme with the Council administering applications for all maintained schools in Coventry and exchanging applications with other local authorities. Nursery Top up care: £2.50 per day for afternoon sessions. Nursery 3-hour session: £15. Some after-school clubs are charged; others are free.
