Curriculum Highlights

Year 5 English is mainly based on the ‘Talk for Writing’ principle, including the study of Romeo and Juliet; daily reading in the ‘The Big Read’; study of Shakespeare; use of the ‘Inspire’ maths approach with manipulatives; introduction to a range of genres (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc.). Year 5 topics include planets and space, forces, lifecycles, and STEM project planning and manufacturing; visits to the Tower of London, Hackney Empire, Apollo Music Projects, and the National Theatre; involvement in Tottenham University programme with trips to Parliament and Oxford University. Year 4 follows the Inspire Maths curriculum; topics include Electricity, Sound, Greek and Roman history themes; regular PE; Wonderlab visit to the Science Museum; production based on a West End musical. Reception focuses on language development, daily phonics, library visits, outdoor play, and a language-rich environment; early number and shape work; daily reading and sharing books. Year 1–Year 6 use Units of Learning to structure the curriculum with a mix of practical and classroom-based activities; enrichment through visits, guests, and performances.

Wraparound Care

Breakfast club runs from 8:00 to 8:25am. After school activities run until 4:30pm. The school day finishes at 3:20pm and there are after-school clubs from 3:20 to 4:30pm. The standard week is 31.7 hours long.

SEND Provision

Lea Valley Primary School is an inclusive mainstream school that recognises SEND and aims to identify and provide for pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities. It follows the SEND Code of Practice (2014), operates a “whole pupil” approach, provides a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) who works with the SEN policy, and offers support and advice for all staff working with pupils with SEND. The school will work with outside agencies as needed to monitor health and wellbeing and to support learning.
