Ethos & Values

"Garfield Primary – Today’s Children, Tomorrow’s Future"

empathy democracy equality inspiration care for the environment

Religious Education is a core subject that explores the big questions about life and how beliefs shape how people live. The curriculum aims to foster understanding, respect and tolerance for people of all faiths and none. EYFS uses the Enfield SACRE framework; KS1 covers Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism and Buddhism; KS2 uses the Haringey Educational Partnership (HEP) programme with repeated emphasis on vocabulary, critical thinking and connections between religion, history and geography.

Head Teacher's Message

The Headteacher welcomes Parents, Carers and Visitors to Garfield and expresses pride in leading a school with warmth, kindness, ambition and a strong community focus; invites readers to explore the site for more information and to see the school’s values in action.

Curriculum Highlights

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 follow the Haringey Education Partnership (HEP) curriculum. Maths is taught using the White Rose Maths scheme as the spine of the Maths curriculum. Reading is taught across the curriculum with a strong focus on reading for pleasure, daily storytime, and library access; includes All Aboard Phonics and a reading spine. Writing is delivered through the 'Talk for Writing' approach with emphasis on oracy and the Talk for Writing process (Imitation, Innovation, Invention) and explicit grammar and spelling instruction. PSHE is delivered through the KAPOW framework with themes covering Health and Wellbeing, Family and Relationships, Safety and the Changing Body, and Citizenship. Religious Education follows Enfield SACRE in Early Years and Key Stage 1, and the HEP programme in Key Stage 2; aims to develop enquiry, knowledge of major world religions and respect for different beliefs. Science follows National Curriculum topics with indoor and outdoor experiences; uses Explorify and STEM resources; demonstrations by Dr Szydlo to promote interest in science. Geography emphasises fieldwork in the local area and beyond, with a knowledge-rich, progressively structured curriculum and fieldwork examples.

Admissions Criteria

Admissions follow Enfield borough criteria: priority for looked-after or previously looked-after children; consideration on exceptional medical grounds with doctor’s statement; siblings at the school; child of a staff member employed for two or more years; other children by straight-line distance from the school; children with an Education, Health and Care Plan named in their Plan; appeal procedures available if oversubscribed; no automatic transfer from Nursery to Reception.
