Understanding Ofsted Behaviour and Attitudes
The Behaviour and Attitudes grade assesses how students behave and their attitudes towards learning. This judgement reflects the school’s culture and environment — factors that significantly impact educational outcomes.
What Inspectors Assess
Behaviour: - Is behaviour consistently good across the school? - Do students behave well in lessons, corridors, and playgrounds? - Is bullying rare and dealt with effectively? - Do students feel safe?
Attitudes to Learning: - Are students engaged and motivated? - Do they take pride in their work? - Are they resilient when facing challenges? - Do they respect teachers and each other?
Attendance: - Is attendance high? - Is persistent absence low? - Does the school tackle absence effectively?
The Four Grades
- Outstanding: Exemplary behaviour and excellent attitudes
- Good: Behaviour and attitudes support learning well
- Requires Improvement: Behaviour or attitudes are not yet good
- Inadequate: Behaviour significantly disrupts learning
Why This Matters
Good behaviour enables learning. Even excellent teaching fails if: - Lessons are disrupted - Students don’t engage - Bullying affects wellbeing - Attendance is poor
For Parents
This grade tells you about: - The school’s culture and environment - Whether your child will feel safe - How disruption is managed - The attitudes of other students
A school with strong behaviour creates conditions where all students can thrive.
