Understanding EBacc Entry
The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) entry rate shows the percentage of students entered for the EBacc combination of GCSE subjects. This measure indicates how many students are studying a broad, academic curriculum that keeps future options open.
What is the EBacc?
The EBacc is not a separate qualification but a combination of GCSE subjects:
- English (Language and/or Literature)
- Mathematics
- Sciences (combined science or separate sciences)
- A language (modern or ancient)
- History or Geography
Students are counted as “entered for EBacc” if they’re taking GCSEs in all five areas.
Why EBacc Matters
The EBacc subjects are considered academically rigorous and are valued by:
- Universities: Many prefer or require these subjects
- Sixth forms: Often prerequisites for A-level study
- Employers: Demonstrate broad academic ability
The government has set a target for 90% of students to be entered for EBacc subjects by 2025, though many schools remain below this.
Interpreting the Data
- 75%+: High EBacc entry, strong academic focus
- 50-75%: Moderate entry, balanced curriculum offer
- Below 50%: Lower academic focus, may offer more vocational options
Considerations
High EBacc entry isn’t always better:
- Some students benefit more from vocational or creative subjects
- Schools serving disadvantaged communities may prioritise other pathways
- The quality of teaching matters more than subject choice
A school with moderate EBacc entry but excellent outcomes for its students may be serving them better than one forcing unsuitable students into academic subjects.
