The application window for September 2025 school places is now open. Whether you're applying for your child's first school place or transitioning to secondary school, it's crucial to know the deadlines.
Primary School Applications (Reception)
Application Deadline: January 15, 2025
If your child was born between September 1, 2020, and August 31, 2021, you need to apply for a primary school place by mid-January.
- How to Apply: Through your local council's admissions portal
- Number of Choices: You can typically list up to 6 schools in order of preference
- Offers Date: April 16, 2025 (National Offer Day)
Secondary School Applications (Year 7)
Application Deadline: October 31, 2024 (CLOSED)
For Year 6 students starting secondary school in September 2025, the deadline has now passed. If you missed it, contact your local council immediately about late applications.
- Offers Date: March 1, 2025 (National Offer Day)
- Waiting Lists: Automatic placement on waiting lists for higher-preference schools
Application Tips
- Visit Schools: Most schools hold open days in the autumn term. Try to visit your preferred schools
- Check Catchment Areas: Use UK School Explorer to see school catchment boundaries
- List Realistic Options: Include at least one school where you're almost certain to get a place
- Understand Admissions Criteria: Each school publishes their oversubscription criteria
- Apply on Time: Late applications are processed after all on-time applications
What Happens After You Apply?
After the deadline, your local council processes applications according to each school's admissions criteria. You'll receive your offer on National Offer Day via email and through your council's admissions portal.
If You Don't Get Your First Choice
Don't panic. You'll be automatically placed on waiting lists for any higher-preference schools. Many families receive offers from waiting lists as other parents decline places. You also have the right to appeal.
